Liquid History – Exploring South Australia's past, a pint at a time

Colonial breweries, the Macclesfield Brewery and Henry Lewis

A short presentation on Henry Lewis and the early years of the Macclesfield Brewery delivered to a 'Lewis family gathering' on 18 November 2023, partly to celebrate the brewing of a facsimile of the Macclesfield ale that won a gold medal at the London International Exhibition in 1873.
The presentation and miscellaneous bits and pieces related to the Macclesfield Brewery and Henry Lewis' involvement with it can be seen or downloaded from here; opens in new window.

The Lion Brewery cellars

A short presentation on the Lion Brewery cellars, delivered to a group of historians, 23 June 2021. The Lion Hotel might call them "tunnels" but they are definitely cellars, literally connected more to the brewery. [Download here; .pdf file; 19MB]

A (personal) pubcrawl through colonial Adelaide

This presentation was part of the 2017 South Australian History Festival; it was delivered at the Franklin Boutique Hotel on 20 May 2017.

The talk examined aspects of mid- to late-nineteenth century Adelaide pubs, pub culture, brewing and distilling and more, from the perspective of the Franklin Hotel (originally the Bristol Tavern) and some of its early licensees (who are, incidentally, amongst my ancestors, hence "(personal)"). (Distribution of) Adelaide pubs, 1837-c1900

This animation was developed for a presentation, "A (personal) pub crawl through colonial Adelaide" and is part of an ongoing project on the distribution of South Australian pubs over time. The locations of the pubs are based primarily on the data in Bob Hoad's Hotels and Publicans of South Australia, 1836-1993, augmented very occasionally by additional or corrected information. The mapping is not absolutely accurate, especially for pubs that opened and/or closed in the first decade of white settlement; for example, where Hoad did not provide an accurate location, the pub has been omitted. It should be used, therefore, more as a guide to the geographic and temporal distribution of pubs over the nineteenth century. [Download here; .mp4 file; 36MB]
